Cold radiators in the middle of a Dublin winter are one of the most common calls we get. The heating fires up, the boiler sounds fine, but one radiator stays stone cold or heats only halfway. It’s frustrating, and it usually points to a specific fault rather than a broken system.
If your radiators are not heating up, the cause is nearly always one of five things. Trapped air, a stuck valve, sludge build-up, an unbalanced system, or a boiler pressure issue. Most can be sorted at home in under an hour. A few need a qualified plumber, especially anything involving the boiler or gas side of things.
Below we walk through each cause, how to spot it, and what to do about it.
Why Is Only One Radiator Not Heating Up?
When a single radiator stays cold while the rest of the house is warm, the fault is almost always inside that specific radiator. The issue is usually trapped air at the top, a closed or seized valve, or a build-up of heating sludge sitting at the bottom.
Feel the radiator carefully with your hand. What you feel tells you what’s wrong.
- Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: trapped air. Needs bleeding.
- Cold at the bottom, warm at the top: sludge or debris settled inside. Needs flushing.
- Cold all over: valve issue or the radiator is isolated from the system.
- Warm in the middle, cold at both ends: heavy sludge across the base and air at the top.
This simple check saves a lot of guesswork before you start unscrewing anything.

How Do You Bleed a Radiator Properly?
Bleeding a radiator releases trapped air so hot water can fill the whole panel again. It’s the single most common fix for a radiator that’s cold at the top, and it takes about five minutes per radiator once you have the right key.
What You Need Before You Start
You’ll need a radiator bleed key (available in any hardware shop for a couple of euro), a small container or old towel to catch drips, and a pair of rubber gloves. Turn the heating off before you start and let the radiators cool for at least twenty minutes. Bleeding a hot radiator can spray scalding water.
The Step-by-Step Process
- Turn off the heating and let radiators cool fully.
- Locate the bleed valve, usually a small square nut at the top corner.
- Hold the container under the valve and slowly turn the key anti-clockwise, no more than a quarter turn.
- Listen for the hiss of escaping air.
- When water starts to trickle out steadily, close the valve.
- Check your boiler pressure gauge afterwards. It should read between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold.

What If All the Radiators Are Cold?
If every radiator in the house is cold, the problem is not with the radiators themselves. It’s with the boiler, the pump, the thermostat, or the wider heating system. This is where it moves from a homeowner fix to something that usually needs a qualified plumber.
Start with the basics before ringing anyone.
- Check the boiler is switched on and there’s no error code on the display.
- Check the room thermostat is calling for heat (turn it up to test).
- Check the boiler pressure gauge. Below 1 bar and the system may have locked out.
- Check the timer or heating controls are set correctly.
- Check the gas supply is on and other gas appliances are working.
If the boiler is firing but no heat reaches the radiators, the circulating pump has likely failed or the diverter valve is stuck. Both need a professional. If the boiler won’t fire at all, you’re looking at ignition, pressure, or gas supply issues, all of which must be handled by an RGI registered installer.

Could Sludge Be the Problem?
Heating sludge is a black, iron-oxide mud that builds up inside radiators and pipework over years of use. It settles at the bottom of radiators and blocks hot water from circulating. If your radiator is cold at the bottom but warm at the top, sludge is the most likely cause.
How to Confirm It’s Sludge
Turn off the heating and feel across the base of the cold radiator. Sludge feels like a cold, heavy zone at the bottom while the top stays warm. You may also notice discoloured water when you bleed the radiator, brown or black rather than clear. Older systems, especially those over ten years old with no inhibitor, are the usual candidates.
What Fixes It
A power flush is the standard fix. It uses a high-flow pump connected to your system to push chemicals and clean water through every radiator and pipe, breaking up sludge and flushing it out. A full power flush on a typical three-bed home takes most of a working day.
Once the system is clean, a corrosion inhibitor is added to prevent it happening again. Topping up inhibitor every few years, especially after draining a radiator, keeps the system healthy long term. When Should You Balance Your Radiators?
Balancing is the process of adjusting each radiator’s flow so hot water is distributed evenly around the house. If your upstairs radiators get red hot but the downstairs ones are lukewarm, or the radiator nearest the boiler cooks while the furthest one barely warms, the system is unbalanced.
This is common after a new radiator install, a boiler swap, or a power flush. It’s also the reason some rooms feel colder than others even though the heating is on for hours.
- Turn off the heating and let everything cool.
- Open all lockshield valves fully (the plastic-capped valve, usually on the return side).
- Turn the heating back on and note the order the radiators heat up.
- Close the lockshield on the fastest-heating radiator by about a quarter turn.
- Work through each radiator in order until they all warm at a similar rate.
Balancing is fiddly and takes patience. It’s often quicker to have a plumber do it as part of a service call, especially in larger houses. If you’re already looking at upgrading your heating system, balancing is included as part of the commissioning process on a new install.

When to Call a Professional
Some radiator problems are safe DIY jobs. Others are not. Anything involving the gas side of the boiler, the flue, or the gas supply must be handled by an RGI registered installer by law. Working on gas without certification is illegal and dangerous.
Call a qualified plumber if you notice any of the following.
- Persistent pressure loss after topping up (points to a leak in the system).
- The boiler locks out or shows a fault code repeatedly.
- Discoloured water, banging, or gurgling noises from the boiler or radiators.
- A smell of gas near the boiler, no matter how faint.
- Radiators leaking from valves, joints, or the panel itself.
- Bleeding hasn’t fixed cold radiators after two or three attempts.
